We're clamping down on those who seek to exploit our community for personal gain.
This week, we've taken significant action to protect residents, public services and taxpayers' money. We successfully prosecuted rogue landlords responsible for a severely overcrowded property in Wembley, where more than 20 people, including young children, were found living in hazardous conditions. No one should have to live in unsafe accommodation, and these convictions send a clear message that Brent will not tolerate landlords or property managers who put profit before people's safety.
We have also secured the conviction of a former nursery operator who falsely claimed more than £92,000 in Nursery Education Grant funding for children who were not attending the setting. This was a serious abuse of public funds and a breach of trust that affected both the council and families who relied on those childcare services. Thanks to the dedication of our Counter Fraud and Investigations Team and partners across the council and the Metropolitan Police, justice has been served. We will continue to take robust action against anyone who attempts to defraud public services and divert resources away from residents who depend on them. If you suspect there’s an unlicensed HMO report it, and report suspected fraud.
October is also Black History Month, and this year's theme, Honouring Our Communities, gives us an opportunity to celebrate the rich contribution of Black communities across Brent. I encourage residents to join our celebration at the Brent Civic Centre on Friday 30 October and take part in events taking place throughout the month across our libraries.
We're also looking ahead to Brent's future and how we respond to the climate emergency. Our draft Climate Action Strategy sets out how we can work together to reduce emissions, improve air quality and build a greener borough for future generations. Residents, businesses and community organisations all have a role to play, and I encourage everyone to take part in the consultation and share their views.
