Car-sharing is expanding in Brent thanks to a new partnership between Brent Council and Co Wheels, providing residents with even more convenient access to vehicles on demand without the costs and responsibilities of car ownership.
The news follows the withdrawal of Zipcar from the UK market earlier this year. Brent Council is now working with a new provider, Co Wheels, in addition to Enterprise, to bring more car-sharing services for residents across the borough.
Car clubs play an important role in supporting the council's wider environmental and transport ambitions. By giving residents access to a car only when they need one, research shows that car clubs can reduce the number of privately owned vehicles on the road – freeing up parking space and supporting walking, cycling and public transport use.
Co Wheels has introduced vehicles at two locations in Brent – in Brondesbury Park and Queens Park – with the potential to roll out to other parts of the borough in the future.
Councillor Promise Knight, Cabinet Member for Cleaner Streets, Transport and Public Realm, said: "We're delighted to be bringing more car club options to residents. If you only need to use a car occasionally, these clubs are a flexible and affordable alternative to owning a vehicle. They also help cut congestion on our roads. Today’s announcement is about giving households more choice in how they travel.”
